When you have strong personal credit and a young business with a lot of unpaid customer invoices, BlueVine and Fundbox are good financing options. Both offer invoice factoring at similar costs. Where they differ: minimum revenue and minimum credit score. With BlueVine, you need at least $120,000 in revenue and a minimum 530 personal credit score. Fundbox does not require a minimum revenue or credit score; the lender does require at least six months of activity in a compatible online accounting software.

Under the Community Advantage Program, the SBA offers the same expedited application and approval process that comes with an SBA Express loan but will guarantee 85% of the loan for loans up to $250,000. This further reduces the risk to lenders, thereby increasing a lender’s appetite to make the loan under the SBA Express program. Homeowners and renters are eligible for long-term, low-interest loans to rebuild or repair a damaged property to pre-disaster condition. Before making a loan, the SBA must establish the cost of repairing or rebuilding the structure (determined by SBA’s Field Inspectors who visit the property), applicant’s repayment ability (determined by applicant’s creditworthiness and income) and whether the applicant can secure credit in the commercial market (called the credit elsewhere test). Applicants who do not qualify for disaster assistance loans are referred to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for grants. Although SBA won’t decline a loan for lack of collateral, the agency is statutorily required to collateralize whatever assets are available including the damaged property, a second home or other real estate.
The SBA Microloan program provides loans to nonprofit intermediary lenders who in turn lend amounts under $50,000 to for-profit small businesses and nonprofit child care centers. The SBA does not guarantee any portion of the loans made under the SBA Microloan program. Microloans have terms up to 6 years and the average size is $14,215.

One drawback of the standard SBA 7(a) loan is that the application process can take months. In order to address this problem, the SBA offers an expedited processing service called the SBA Express Loan, which guarantees a response to an application within 36 hours (note: this means the SBA will notify your lender within 36 hours if your application has been approved, but it may take significantly longer for your lender to process and fund your loan).

Factoring is a finance method where a company sells its receivables at a discount to get cash up-front. It’s often used by companies with poor credit or by businesses such as apparel manufacturers, which have to fill orders long before they get paid. However, it’s an expensive way to raise funds. Companies selling receivables generally pay a fee that’s a percentage of the total amount. If you pay a 2 percent fee to get funds 30 days in advance, it’s equivalent to an annual interest rate of about 24 percent. For that reason, the business has gotten a bad reputation over the years. That said, the economic downturn has forced companies to look to alternative financing methods and companies like The Receivables Exchange are trying to make factoring more competitive. The exchange allows companies to offer their receivables to dozens of factoring companies at once, along with hedge funds, banks, and other finance companies. These lenders will bid on the invoices, which can be sold in a bundle or one at a time.
SBA International Trade Loan Program: Funding up to $5 million in working capital and/or fixed assets for businesses that export or for businesses negatively impacted by imports. Terms up to 25 years.
Lenders will focus on this metric as well. The amount you can afford to repay can usually be determined by knowing and understanding you Debt Service Coverage Ratio. Because you’re just starting out and your personal credit score is below 600, your best bet is microloans through nonprofit lenders or the Small Business Administration. The downside is that these are “micro” amounts of money, usually no more than $50,000. Many microlenders, however, help businesses grow and establish better credit. SBA microloans generally have APRs of 8% to 8.5% with manageable repayment terms. Successfully repaying microloans will boost your credit score and make you eligible for bigger financing.

SBA guarantee fee: This is a fee charged by the Small Business Administration for all 7(a) loans it guarantees (the SBA will guarantee loans up to 85% of the loan amount). All SBA lenders are required to pay this fee (if applicable), and lenders have the option of passing this fee onto their borrowers. The guarantee fee is based on the loan’s repayment terms and the dollar amount guaranteed, not the total value of the loan. For loans under $150,000, there is no guarantee fee. For loans over $150,000 with terms of one year or less, the fee is 0.25% of the guaranteed portion. For loans with terms longer than one year, the fee is 3% for loan amounts ranging from $150,000 to $700,000 and 3.5% for loans over $700,000. An additional 0.25% is charged for any guaranteed portion of more than $1 million.
If approved, it might take between 30 and 60 days to close the loan and receive funds. The length of this time requirement will be determined by the use of funds and what collateral is required. If you’re using the loan to buy real estate or a business entity, your loan closing will coincide with the purchase closing.
