Interest rates on SBA 7(a) loans currently range from 6.75% – 9.25%. The interest rate depends on a variety of factors, such as your credit score and the length of the repayment term. The interest rate may be fixed for the life of the loan or variable based on market rates. The SBA limits rate that lenders can charge for an SBA 7(a) loan with a maximum rate set at 2.75% + prime. SBA Express Loans (see below) have slightly higher rates than standard 7(a) loans.

Its function was and is to “aid, counsel, assist and protect, insofar as is possible, the interests of small business concerns”.

The SBA uses it to pre-screen. Cutoff is 140. Banks will use it to pre-screen their loan applicants but they usually set their cutoff higher, typically around 160. If your score falls below that, they will look at your business as too much of a risk. Plus, banks don’t want to waste their time filling out lengthy SBA loan applications if they are confident you’ll get denied because of a low FICO SBSS score.

• Meet with lender(s). You (and your advisors) should dress in a professional manner, as it is important for the lender to get an immediate positive impression, Anderson says. After a brief introduction, you should present the lender with two copies of your business plan, including your financial projections. You should discuss your business including the loan you are requesting (a formal written presentation is not required). The lender will ask questions and you should be prepared to provide detailed information in response. “Make the lender feel comfortable doing business with you,” Anderson says. If the lender is comfortable with the relationship, s/he will provide you with an SBA Loan Package that includes forms required by the SBA and information the lender requires. Your place on the credit spectrum is one factor that will determine which loans you’ll qualify for. You can get your credit report for free from each of the three major credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian and TransUnion — a year. You can get your FICO score for free from several credit card issuers as well as personal finance websites, including NerdWallet.
In addition to your credit score, lenders will consider how long your business has been operating. You need to have been in business at least one year to qualify for most online small-business loans and at least two years to qualify for most bank loans.
• Develop your business plan. You need to have a business plan that states in writing what your business is, what you need money for, and why you will be successful. If you have a 25-page business plan already, you can update the Executive Summary section with information about your financing needs. If you don’t have a business plan, you need to develop one — even a five-page document will be more impressive than none at all. Templates and software are available online to provide valuable guidance. For example, SCORE has a template that provides considerable help. Inc. also has a guide on how to write a business plan. “It is useful to have an experienced businessperson review and critique the draft business plan,” Anderson says. In addition, Cruz adds, have someone review your plan for grammar and spelling.
Any new small business loan is going to likely require you to have a strong personal credit score. The lender won’t be able to use business history or credit to determine the potential success of the business. Instead, they’ll look at your personal credit history and what personal assets you have that can be used as collateral.
Those with poor credit in a business-to-business environment that have receivables can use them as collateral. Alternative lenders, such as so-called Internet lenders, will charge higher interest rates, but generally have more relaxed standards.
