“business loans typical rates -small business loans az”

I have a question about an SBA loan that my ex-husband received several years ago. Because we were married at the time, I was required to sign the loan papers. We subsequently divorced. I recently learned that he is 90+ day late in repaying the loan (not the first time he’s been late) and the bank had an atty send him, his 2 business partners and me a letter demanding full payment. My ex subsequently worked out a repayment plan with the bank and they’ve put collection on hold. If he doesn’t meet those guidelines (and I’m fairly certain he won’t), the will go back to the demand for full payment. His office bldg is collateral, however it’s underwater. He filed bankruptcy about a year ago and included this loan. I’m looking for any advice on what I should be doing at this point to protect myself/my personal credit, and any indication of what I should expect if he does default.

In order to get a HEL or HELOC, you’ll need to have 20%+ equity in your home, but the rule of thumb is between 30-40% minimum because the loans typically max out at 80% loan to value (LTV). A HEL gives you a lump sum, which acts like a second mortgage, and a HELOC works like a credit card or business line of credit. Let’s take a look at who each option might be right for.

Generally, these loans are available to partially self-financed startups (the SBA likes to see that the owner invests at least 30% of their own money in the business) and startups where the owners have prior experience in the industry and in management. The primary benefit of an SBA loan is the low interest rate and long repayment term, making your monthly payments lower than they would be with other loan options.

You must give up a percentage of the ownership of your business, which typically is a non-negotiated offer from the VC firm. Many VC firms will want significant ownership of your business. You can expect to give up at least 10 – 30% of your business from non-controlling VC investors.

If you’re worried about qualifying for a loan, don’t. While traditional lenders only approve a quarter of small business loans, lending marketplaces like Lendio approve more than 60%. That doesn’t mean you can drag your credit score through the gutter and walk away with copious amounts of financing – but it does mean that you don’t have to be perfect to qualify for a variety of solid loan options.

To late for us, 7 years after our store closed we are going bankrupt, wish we had known to do it back then, but its a good warning for others, don’t take out a government loan. There is no statute of limitations on government debt.

In 2008 we defaulted on SBA loan, went through a foreclosure and our lawyer told us we were ‘all set’ and we through we were, this SUMMER we got a bill for $150,000. No contact in 7 years and the SBA all of a sudden sent us right on to the department of Treasury, no due process…. forced us into an emergency bankruptcy.

The scoring is based upon personal and business credit history and other financial information. A strong history of business credit with timely payments to vendors and suppliers may help boost your SBSS score.

Small businesses in industries that have periods of boom and bust every year (in other words, busy seasons and slow season) often face cash flow problems when business is entering the busy season. They needs to hire workers and buy materials but likely won’t be paid for their work for 30-90 days. The SBA CAPLines allows small businesses grow as fast as possible and not run into cash flow issues.

New avenues also are opening up for equity crowdfunding, in which you tap a public pool of investors who agree to finance your small business in exchange for equity ownership. This became an even broader option recently with new securities regulations that allow small-business owners to reach out to mom-and-pop investors, not just accredited investors.

If possible, structure the investment as a convertible note. A convertible note is a loan that pays interest, but converts into stock under certain conditions, like if venture capitalists invest in the company later. There are 2 big benefits of a convertible note:

If you want a large chunk of change from your lender, don’t be secretive. Tell your lender exactly why you need the money. Present your plan for the future, and tell the lender how its funding figures into your plan.

Family members and friends who like your business idea may be willing to lend you startup funding via private money. Usually, those loans have very favorable rates and repayment terms, but you have to have access to a network of wealthy individuals.
