A term loan is ideal for expansion and buying equipment, so consider StreetShares if you have at least $100,000 in revenue and six months in business. For businesses that are younger and have less revenue, BlueVine is a better bet. If borrowing costs are important to you, StreetShares offers lower APRs than BlueVine.
New avenues also are opening up for equity crowdfunding, in which you tap a public pool of investors who agree to finance your small business in exchange for equity ownership. This became an even broader option recently with new securities regulations that allow small-business owners to reach out to mom-and-pop investors, not just accredited investors.
Live Oak Bank is second only to Wells Fargo in dollar volume lent through the SBA program. Its APRs range from 5.75% to 7.75%. Loan amounts range from $75,000 to $5 million; the average in 2015 was $1.1 million.
Perhaps the most common way of financing a new small business is to borrow money from friends or family. Of course, if your credit is bad — and your family and friends know it — you’ll have to persuade them that you’ll be able to pay them back.
Obtaining a small business loan essentially enables you to effectively run all aspects of your business, minimizing any disruption during slow periods and giving you cash flow options if you’re ready to take your company to the next level.
Then ask your SBA district office for the names of a few approved lenders. The agency also recently set up the SBA Lender Match tool to match potential borrowers with lenders. Banks follow SBA guidelines but use their own underwriting criteria to evaluate loan applications.
If your company is on track to make more than $25,000 in annual revenue but you’ve been open less than a year, you can turn to microloans and personal loans for financing. Microloans come in small amounts and have low APRs and manageable repayment terms. If your credit is in the high 600s, you can opt for a personal loan, though they often aren’t available for more than $35,000.
The SBA can guarantee up to 85% of loans of $150,000 or less and 75% of loans of more than $150,000. The agency says its average loan amount was about $375,000 in 2016. The program’s maximum loan amount is $5 million.
I took out a SBA loan for $75,000 in 2006-7. The business went under months later. Both my attorney and myself tried to contact the bank and SBA and no one wanted to speak with us. I followed my attorneys advise and sold all the assets and put the money on the bank account. I’m certain I wrote them a letter explaining all that was done. The bank continued to take the monthly payments until the money ran out and then sent me to collections. I got my attorney involved and she met with an attorney from the bank. The attorney said that they would no longer bother me – which they have not. Great – then a couple years later I was due a Fed Tax amount that never came and then a letter saying that for repayment of our defaulted SBA loan they were keeping my return. This has happened every year since? I’ve received no accounting or statement of any kind. How long will this continue? Do I have any way to stop this without resurrecting this old debt?
There are two loan approvals you’ll need to obtain. First, your bank must review your application and decide whether you meet their qualifications for funding, subject to SBA approval. Banks are obligated to observe the “credit elsewhere” rule, meaning that if your company is qualified for a loan from any other source without the credit insurance provided by SBA, you should be sent there.

In reality, most lenders have a standard discovery list of documents that are required to apply for and process a loan. Knowing which documents will be required and getting that documentation in order before you apply for your business loan can reduce your stress and speed-up approval of your loan.
I co-signed a 50K SBA loan with my husband in 2008. We divorced in 2011 and I relinquished all association with the business. To calculate the Return, all payments received on borrower loans, net of principal repayment, credit losses, and servicing costs for such loans, are aggregated and then divided by the average daily amount of aggregate outstanding principal. To annualize this cumulative return, it is divided by the dollar-weighted average age of the loans in days and then multiplied by 365.
One drawback of the standard SBA 7(a) loan is that the application process can take months. In order to address this problem, the SBA offers an expedited processing service called the SBA Express Loan, which guarantees a response to an application within 36 hours (note: this means the SBA will notify your lender within 36 hours if your application has been approved, but it may take significantly longer for your lender to process and fund your loan).

We closed our business due to downturn in economy last year. We finally received an OIC approval from SBA after almost a year. The only specifics it really gives on the “consequences” is that we will not be able to receive any type of gov’t loans in the future (SBA, FHA, VA, student loans), and that we will be 1099’s for the difference. I know if you settle a credit card and they 1099 you, you can fill out the worksheet to regarding debt vs. income, and if your income in insufficient the 1099 income is invalid. Is it the same with this SBA debt? Also, does the OIC settlement release my personal guarantee?

Keep in mind that since you don’t have a business started up yet or you’re just starting out, you likely have to borrow money based on your personal finances. For this reason, you’re more likely to qualify for startup financing with a strong personal credit score (720 or higher).
Businesses are also eligible for long-term, low-interest loans to recover from declared disasters. Similar to the homeowner’s loan program mentioned above, small business owners pledge any available assets and acquire a similar pledge from a spouse or partner in the case of shared assets. If defaulting on the debt, the spouse or partner must surrender their value in the assets. The total value of an applicant’s assets is not considered by the SBA; therefore, a company may be approved for a loan regardless of whether that entity has little or substantial net worth.
