Large bank institutions, such as Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo, generate the bulk of their SBA loan volume by loans, especially the express loan and line of credit, offered to those who would be declined for ‘normal’ bank credit due to factors such as length of time in business or slightly more conservative underwriting factors. Banks have sophisticated computer systems that generally make this process seamless, and are quite different from other financial institutions who utilize SBA lending for separate and distinct purposes.
Small business credit cards aren’t an ideal way to fund large capital investments for your business startup, but they can be an essential tool for cash flow management. You can cover expenses with your small business credit card while waiting for payments from your customers, preserving cash and earning rewards at the same time.

With a strong personal credit score and at least one year in business, you can turn to StreetShares and OnDeck for equipment and expansion financing. StreetShares is better if you’re seeking a smaller amount of financing: You just need $25,000 in annual revenue to qualify for its term loan, which maxes out at $100,000. If you have at least $100,000 in revenue, OnDeck, with loans up to $500,000, is better suited for more mature businesses seeking larger amounts of financing.
Personal loans can be a sensible alternative to small business loans in situations where the small business doesn’t have a solid history of profit, or can’t currently provide the documentation and analysis a bank requires to consider a small business loan. The personal loan is issued to an individual—the business owner—based on their credit. It is ultimately their responsibility to pay back the loan.
In order to get a HEL or HELOC, you’ll need to have 20%+ equity in your home, but the rule of thumb is between 30-40% minimum because the loans typically max out at 80% loan to value (LTV). A HEL gives you a lump sum, which acts like a second mortgage, and a HELOC works like a credit card or business line of credit. Let’s take a look at who each option might be right for.

These loans provide the same government guarantee and low interest rates as traditional SBA loans, but they can close in as little as 45 days — about half the time it takes to close a traditional SBA loan.
