Lenders will want to know how you plan to use the money and will want to see that you have a strong ability to repay. They may require a solid business plan that details the purpose of the loan and how you expect it to increase profits.
While technically SBA CAPLines can be issued as stand alone products, typically these are only offered to borrowers in conjunction with a traditional SBA 7(a) loan or a CDC / SBA 504 loan. Very well qualified borrowers or those businesses that have the potential to bring in a great deal of other business to a bank may be able to find a lender willing to issue a stand alone CAPLines line of credit.
Finally, the SBA International Trade Loan Program you must show that you can develop new foreign markets, expand existing foreign markets, and/or that your small business was adversely affected by imports and that the loan will increase your competitiveness.

• Your business needs to meet the SBA’s size requirements. In order to qualify as a small business, your firm needs to meet the government’s definition of a small business for your industry. Some industry size requirements are based on average annual receipts; other industries are judged based on the number of employees, which generally can’t exceed 500 workers — although there are exceptions. If the SBA accepts your offer, then everyone will be happy as long as the repayments are made. In cases where the SBA rejects the offer, you usually have an opportunity to recalibrate and submit again. Other times, the SBA will simply send the account to the Treasury Department. At that point, the Treasury Department has a full range of collection options (like garnishing wages and taking tax returns).
A crowdfunding site like Kickstarter.com can be a fun and effective way to raise money for a relatively low cost, creative project. You’ll set a goal for how money you’d like to raise over a period of time, say, $1,500 over 40 days. Your friends, family, and strangers then use the site to pledge money. Kickstarter has funded roughly 1,000 projects, from rock albums to documentary films since its launch last year. But keep in mind, this isn’t about long-term funding. Rather, it’s supposed to facilitate the asking for and giving of support for single, one-off ideas. Usually, project-creators offer incentives for pledging, such as if you give a writer $15, you’ll get a book in return. There’s no long-term return on investment for supporters and not even the ability to write off donations for tax purposes. Still, that hasn’t stopped close to 100,000 people from pledging to Kickstarter projects.
The Microloan program provides small loans ranging from under $500 to $50,000. Under this program, the SBA makes funds available to nonprofit intermediaries that, in turn, make the small loans directly to entrepreneurs, including veterans. Proceeds can be used for typical business purposes such as working capital, or the purchase of furniture, fixtures, machinery, supplies, equipment, and inventory. Microloans may not be used for the purchase of real estate. Interest rates are negotiated between the borrower and the intermediary. The maximum term for a microloan is 7 years. • Prepare financial projections. A lender is going to want to see some evidence that you’ll be able to pay back the loan. The most important information you can provide a lender is a cash-flow projection. A monthly cash-flow projection of 12 to 24 months or more may be required by the lender; however, this period may vary by lender and/or type of business. “Cash is the ‘life blood’ of small business, and you and the lender need to take precautions to be sure that you will not run out of cash,” Anderson says. It also may be necessary to provide projections of profit & loss statements and/or balance sheets. Again, this will vary by lender and/or type of business.
Small business loans are on the rise, with the U.S. Small Business Administration reporting that approximately $11 billion was approved across small business loan programs for the entire year of 2012. And yet, that amount had already almost doubled—hitting $18.9 billion—by mid-2017.
A business line of credit provides access to flexible cash. Lenders give you access to a specific amount of credit (say, $100,000), but you don’t make payments or get charged interest until you tap into the funds.
The application process for an SBA line of credit through the CAPLines Program is similar to that for an SBA 7(a) loan. Lenders, like banks and credit unions, that participate in the SBA 7(a) program are likely to also participate in the CAPLines program. However, as we mentioned earlier, these lines of credit can be difficult to get as standalone products. Typically you’ll need to bring a lot of other business to a lender to have them find underwriting an SBA line of credit to be worth it.
Under law, the SBA can’t guarantee loans to businesses that can obtain the money they need on their own. So you have to apply for a loan on your own from a bank or other financial institution and be turned down.

• Your business first must be turned down for private financing. Yes, you read that correctly. Your business needs to try to get a loan from a bank or other financial institution or lender directly. Under law, the SBA can’t guarantee loans to businesses that can obtain the money they need on their own. So you have to apply for a loan on your own and be turned down.

We closed our business due to downturn in economy last year. We finally received an OIC approval from SBA after almost a year. The only specifics it really gives on the “consequences” is that we will not be able to receive any type of gov’t loans in the future (SBA, FHA, VA, student loans), and that we will be 1099’s for the difference. I know if you settle a credit card and they 1099 you, you can fill out the worksheet to regarding debt vs. income, and if your income in insufficient the 1099 income is invalid. Is it the same with this SBA debt? Also, does the OIC settlement release my personal guarantee?
I received a disaster loan after hurricane Katrina. I had a small house that I was remodeling. My insurance cancelled because house was not livable. I became disabled after getting the loan and was forced to file for SS disability. With the decline in my income I missed a couple of payments and my loan was over to a collection agency. They deduct my payment out of my SS check before I get it. It doesn’t leave me enough to even rent an apt. Is there any way I can get this loan forgiven. Please help!
If approved, it might take between 30 and 60 days to close the loan and receive funds. The length of this time requirement will be determined by the use of funds and what collateral is required. If you’re using the loan to buy real estate or a business entity, your loan closing will coincide with the purchase closing.
The lack of a credit history, collateral or the inability to secure a loan through a bank doesn’t mean no one will lend to you. One option would be to apply for a microloan, a small business loan ranging from $500 to $35,000. Microloans are often so small that commercial banks can’t be bothered lending the funds. Instead of a bank, you need to turn to a microlender. a non-profit organization that works differently than banks. Microlenders offer smaller loan sizes, usually require less documentation than banks, and often apply more flexible underwriting criteria. There are a few hundred microlenders throughout the U.S. and they often charge slightly higher interest rates for loans than banks. “Microloans are really for that startup entrepreneur or an entrepreneur in an existing business facing a capital gap who needs to secure capital for new equipment or to service a contract,” says Connie Evans, president and CEO of AEO, which represents 400 mostly non-profit microlenders and microenterprise organizations.

I am not getting any cancellation of my debt with SBA and certainly no offset as income. Do I have to report this as income or is there some way to dispute? Or have I unwillingly allowed this as part of some court proceeding with the debt to SBA
