Interest rates on SBA 7(a) loans currently range from 6.75% – 9.25%. The interest rate depends on a variety of factors, such as your credit score and the length of the repayment term. The interest rate may be fixed for the life of the loan or variable based on market rates. The SBA limits rate that lenders can charge for an SBA 7(a) loan with a maximum rate set at 2.75% + prime. SBA Express Loans (see below) have slightly higher rates than standard 7(a) loans.

• Your business first must be turned down for private financing. Yes, you read that correctly. Your business needs to try to get a loan from a bank or other financial institution or lender directly. Under law, the SBA can’t guarantee loans to businesses that can obtain the money they need on their own. So you have to apply for a loan on your own and be turned down.
SBA guarantee fee: This is a fee charged by the Small Business Administration for all 7(a) loans it guarantees (the SBA will guarantee loans up to 85% of the loan amount). All SBA lenders are required to pay this fee (if applicable), and lenders have the option of passing this fee onto their borrowers. The guarantee fee is based on the loan’s repayment terms and the dollar amount guaranteed, not the total value of the loan. For loans under $150,000, there is no guarantee fee. For loans over $150,000 with terms of one year or less, the fee is 0.25% of the guaranteed portion. For loans with terms longer than one year, the fee is 3% for loan amounts ranging from $150,000 to $700,000 and 3.5% for loans over $700,000. An additional 0.25% is charged for any guaranteed portion of more than $1 million.
SBA Microloan qualifications will vary from intermediary to intermediary. Unlike most of SBA loan programs, the SBA leaves qualifications up to the intermediary which set all eligibility requirements and make all credit decisions.
Microloans and personal loans are good options to finance your inventory and daily expenses if you’re an established business but make less than $25,000 in revenue. Microloans through nonprofits and the SBA usually have low APR and manageable payment terms, but you’d have to deal with stringent requirements. When you have strong personal credit and a young business with a lot of unpaid customer invoices, BlueVine and Fundbox are good financing options. Both offer invoice factoring at similar costs. Where they differ: minimum revenue and minimum credit score. With BlueVine, you need at least $120,000 in revenue and a minimum 530 personal credit score. Fundbox does not require a minimum revenue or credit score; the lender does require at least six months of activity in a compatible online accounting software.
• Meet with lender(s). You (and your advisors) should dress in a professional manner, as it is important for the lender to get an immediate positive impression, Anderson says. After a brief introduction, you should present the lender with two copies of your business plan, including your financial projections. When we talk about an SBA 504 loan, we’re really talking about two different loans. One loan for 50% or less of your deal is issued by a traditional lender like a bank, credit union, or non-bank lender. The other loan is issued by a CDC for 40% or less of your deal. The difference of at least 10% is made up by you, the borrower. The two loans will have different rates, terms, fees, and limits. Combined, these rates will make up your total SBA/CDC 504 loan rates. The 504 Fixed Asset Financing Program is administered through non-profit Certified Development Companies throughout the country. This program provides funding for the purchase or construction of real estate and/or the purchase of business equipment/machinery. Of the total project costs, a lender must provide 50% of the financing, a Certified Development Company provides up to 40% of the financing through a 100% SBA-guaranteed debenture, and the applicant provides approximately 10% of the financing.
