Loans through Prosper are not traditional small business loans. Personal loans through Prosper are based on your credit score, and issued to you as an individual (not a business). For some small business owners needing loans, a personal loan won’t answer their needs—but for other entrepreneurs, it’s perfect. In some cases, such as when a business doesn’t yet have a proven track record, our small business loans can provide lower rates or even just the ability to get a loan.

Prior to submitting your application, it is important to consider the documents you’ll need to compile. We require your business’s three most recent bank statements and our one-page application to get started. Depending on other factors, a lender may request a month-to-date bank statement, tax returns, P&L and balance sheet.

Transworld Systems, a debt collector, brings most of the lawsuits for National Collegiate against delinquent borrowers. And in legal filings, it is usually a Transworld representative who swears to the accuracy of the records backing up the loan. Transworld did not respond to a request for comment.

The following step-by-step guide will outline how businesses qualify for SBA-backed loans, the different type of loans that the SBA guarantees, and how to be successful in securing an SBA-backed loan.

For established businesses with annual sales of $150,000 or more, SmartBiz and Funding Circle offer good financing options. You’ll get lower APRs with SmartBiz, which offers SBA loans, but Funding Circle has a less rigorous and shorter application process. Funding Circle also has a higher maximum loan amount of $500,000 compared with SmartBiz’s $350,000.

The SBA requires that 504 recipient businesses must create or retain at least one job for every $65,000 provided by the SBA loan, though for small manufacturers, the number is lowered to one job per $100,000.

Lawsuits against borrowers who have fallen behind on their consumer loans are typically filed in state or local courts, where records are often hard to search. This means that there is no national tally of just how often National Collegiate’s trusts have gone to court.

A term loan is ideal for expansion and buying equipment, so consider StreetShares if you have at least $100,000 in revenue and six months in business. For businesses that are younger and have less revenue, BlueVine is a better bet. If borrowing costs are important to you, StreetShares offers lower APRs than BlueVine.

The SBA has another financing program called SBA Express, which aims to respond to loan applications within 36 hours. If your credit and small-business finances are in excellent shape, the wait may be shorter. The maximum amount for this type of financing is $350,000, and the maximum amount the SBA could guarantee is 50%.

So, if the lender prefers checking the Experian Intelliscore (business credit) as the default, the SBSS pulls in the Experian data set. If that report doesn’t offer enough information, it will automatically check another business credit score, like the D&B PAYDEX score. It could also then move on to your Equifax business credit data. If there’s not enough business credit data available, it will just use the personal credit data to calculate the SBSS score, along with your business financials.

Young, ambitious and willing to make a bet on your future earnings? Consider how Kjerstin Erickson, Saul Garlick and Jon Gosier are trying to raise money. Through an online marketplace called the Thrust Fund, the three have offered up a percentage of their future lifetime earnings in exchange for upfront, undesignated venture funding. Erickson is willing to swap 6 percent of her future lifetime earnings for $600,000. The other two entrepreneurs are each offering 3 percent of future earnings for $300,000. Beware: the legality and enforceability of these “personal investment contracts” have yet to be established.

Interest rates on SBA 7(a) loans currently range from 6.75% – 9.25%. The interest rate depends on a variety of factors, such as your credit score and the length of the repayment term. The interest rate may be fixed for the life of the loan or variable based on market rates. The SBA limits rate that lenders can charge for an SBA 7(a) loan with a maximum rate set at 2.75% + prime. SBA Express Loans (see below) have slightly higher rates than standard 7(a) loans.

“Companies like OnDeck are so important – they help you build your business credit while removing stressful ups and downs in cash flow, which is really helpful for businesses like mine. Last year we made about 300 watches, and this year we’ll make over 1,000 thanks to funding from OnDeck.”

Hi, I live in California and defaulted on an SBA loan in 2003 when my business closed. As mentioned earlier, online lenders may provide funding (and quickly) if other alternatives fail, especially for those with bad credit. Aside from higher interest rates, Internet lenders are known for onerous terms and poor transparency, so be sure you really need the money–and can pay it back–if you go this route.

Since your business has steady revenue and has been operating for more than a year, consider OnDeck and Kabbage. If your personal credit score is at least 500, offers term loans up to $500,000, which is an attractive option for large expansion projects or buying expensive equipment. If you’re looking for short-term financing or need a smaller amount, consider Kabbage, which does not require a minimum credit score. Kabbage offers only six- or 12-month financing of up to $250,000 at high borrowing costs.

Packaging fee: Sometimes an optional service, the packaging of a loan refers to the preparation of the loan application (e.g., relevant financial statements, planned use of funds) so that the lender can review it. If you borrow through a lending platform, this fee is frequently standard, as the lending platform helps you prepare your loan application before it is sent to lenders for review.

I defaulted on an Sba loan in 2007. I just filed federal taxes and was to receive a refund. I received a letter stating they are keeping my return. My worry is my house. Will they send me notice of liens? Can they forclose on it? The loan was for $14,500.

In addition to your credit score, lenders will consider how long your business has been operating. You need to have been in business at least one year to qualify for most online small-business loans and at least two years to qualify for most bank loans.

Prosper is similar to LendingClub, but it doesn’t have separate loans for small businesses. However, you can use its unsecured personal loans for small business purposes. This can make Prosper a good choice if you need a smaller amount (you can borrow up to $35,000) and your business doesn’t have the established track record to qualify for dedicated small business loans. 1. Once an SBA loan is approved, the SBA mails closing documents to the applicant for signature. Disbursements include an initial unsecured amount of $25,000 (See latest fact sheet), and subsequent disbursements depending upon construction progress and continued insurance coverage. After final disbursement, the loan is transferred to one of the SBA’s servicing offices for management, or to its collections office in the case of default.
Judges have already dismissed dozens of lawsuits against former students, essentially wiping out their debt, because documents proving who owns the loans are missing. A review of court records by The New York Times shows that many other collection cases are deeply flawed, with incomplete ownership records and mass-produced documentation.
The SBA does not set limits on the rates, terms, and fees for the traditional lender. That leaves the details of the loan up to negotiation. In general, interest rates will be between 4% – 8% and will have a reset point. Typically the loan will have a 5-10 year term but will be amortized over 20-25 years. This amortization schedule will mean a lower monthly payment but also result in large balloon when the loan matures.
